Sports law: the basics

Sports law is a transversal, lively and constantly evolving field, at the crossroads of public law, private law and the rules specific to the sports movement. This two-day course offers a structured and operational approach to the fundamentals of sports law. It makes it possible to understand the actors, the applicable standards and the specific legal mechanisms that govern the practice of sports, professional as well as amateur. Through concrete scenarios and practical cases, participants acquire essential legal reflexes to analyze, secure and anticipate the problems of the sports sector.

Actors and general framework of sports law

Sports law is based on an ecosystem of actors with logics that are sometimes complementary, sometimes competing. This first part aims to clearly identify the roles of the sports movement, federations, public authorities, companies and actors in the field such as athletes, coaches and referees. It makes it possible to understand how sports standards, transnational rules and public authority interventions are articulated. Participants are confronted with concrete situations, such as accessing the status of top-level athlete or challenging the statutes of a federation, in order to identify the competent courts and applicable legal obligations.

Key legal issues and mechanisms

This second part addresses the legal pillars of sports law through a practical and structured approach. It covers sports contracts, whether it is relationships between athletes and clubs or the organization of sports events. The training also explores the functioning of sports justice, both at the federal and international levels, with a scenario dedicated to disciplinary commissions. Finally, the legal framework for doping and criminal, civil and administrative liability regimes are analyzed on the basis of concrete cases, such as prohibitions on the movement of supporters, in order to anchor the concepts in current and operational issues.
